Country Place Ottawa Neighbourhood Tour
Merivale Gardens – Grenfell Glen – Pineglen – Country Place Ottawa
On today’s Ottawa neighbourhood tour we’re visiting the Merivale Gardens – Grenfell Glen – Pineglen – Country Place neighbourhood. As you might have guessed, this suburban Ottawa neighbourhood is made up of four distinct communities.
All of the sections of this neighbourhood were part of the former City of Nepean.
Merivale Gardens OTtawa
To get a feel for the whole neighbourhood, we need to look at each part. Merivale Gardens is a small residential neighbourhood of about 500 residents. The homes surround Merivale Park and are in turn surrounded by the lush, forested green space of the Greenbelt.
Pinhey Sand Dunes are directly south of Merivale Gardens, and the neighbourhood has easy access to the nature trails in Pinhey Forest. The homes in Merivale Gardens are primarily detached, single-family homes on beautiful, wooded lots. Nature lovers will feel right at home here.
Grenfell Glen Ottawa
Grenfell Glen has another 450 residents or so, also surrounded by the Greenbelt. This little neighbourhood was developed in the mid-1950s. Located to the southeast of Merivale Gardens, Grenfell Glen is filled with midcentury detached homes.
The homes sit on large lots with big trees, and the neighbourhood has plentiful access to the nature trails in this wooded part of the Greenbelt. It is also home to a large park with a soccer field, baseball diamond, and tennis courts.
The areas are neatly bisected by Slack Road.
Pineglen Ottawa
Pineglen predates Grenfell Glen by a few years. Building began in 1951 in this community east of Merivale Gardens and Grenfell Glen. This neighborhood is further divided into Pineglen West and Pineglen East (or Pineglen Annex).
Home to about 1000 residents, Pineglen lacks the easy access to Pinhey Forest of both Merivale and Grenfell Glen. But the Greenbelt Pathway runs along its southern border, along with Black Rapids Creek. To the east, the neighbourhood borders the Rideau River.
You’ll find parks and local businesses scattered throughout Pineglen. While there are a few multi-unit homes, the area remains mostly detached, single-family homes.
Country Place Ottawa
Country Place is tucked in south of Pineglen East and next to Pineglen West. The Greenbelt Pathway becomes less wooded as it passes by Country Place’s southern border.
Country Place was developed later than its companions, with most of the homes built in the 1970s. It is still mainly detached single-family homes but the lots are less wooded than those in the other parts of the neighbourhood.
You’ll find Black Rapids Creek Nature Preserve and Rideau Canal Lock 13 – Black Rapids Lockstation right off the southeastern tip of Country Place.
These four distinct neighbourhoods do have plenty things in common. They’re filled with detached homes and have ample and easy access to gorgeous wooded areas of the Greenbelt.
