Welcome to Britannia Village Ottawa Neighbourhood Tour

Britannia Village

Welcome to the lovely and historic Britannia Village. One of the oldest neighbourhoods in Ottawa, Britannia Village started developing in the 1820s. Sitting right on the shores of the Ottawa River less than 10 kilometres from downtown Ottawa, this is a neighbourhood that is famous for its fantastic location.

While Britannia Village started like many river towns in Canada, with a couple of mills and a house or two, it soon became a popular tourist destination. Visitors came for swimming, boating, and other water activities and soon began building and buying summer cottages.

By the early 1900s, Britannia Village was connected to Ottawa by a streetcar line and attracted 6000 daily visitors to its beaches and other entertainment. It remained mostly a summer destination until around 1950. WWII veterans sought out the area for its housing opportunities.

Summer cottages became the bungalows that you see today dotted throughout the neighbourhood. Residents enjoy the proximity to the water, including Britannia Beach, as well as wooded areas. It still has the summer cottage feel that made it so popular over a century ago.

Living in Britannia Village offers residents a taste of history and every convenience of the urban centre of Ottawa. Residents can ride their bicycles right into the city on the NCC pathway and nearby shopping includes the Lincoln Fields Shopping Centre and the specialty shops of Carling Avenue.

The neighbourhood is also home to the Olde Forge Community Resource Centre and the nearly 150-year-old Britannia Yacht Club. This charming village has a mix of homes including those original summer cottages and streets with homes from the 60s and 70s.

Britannia Village is quaint and convenient, with historic buildings and a lot of beautiful nature. If you’re moving to Ottawa, take a look around to see if this neighbourhood has the vibe for your family. If you’re living in Ottawa, take the short trip and enjoy a summer day at Britannia Beach.
